With a population of 40,302, Salisbury is a cathedral city in Wiltshire, England. It is situated at the meeting point of the Avon, Nadder, and Bourne rivers. About 20 miles (30 kilometres) separate the city from Southampton and 30 miles (50 kilometres) separate Bath.
Salisbury is located on the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire’s southeast region. Old Sarum, to the north of the city, once housed Salisbury Cathedral. After the cathedral was moved, a community sprang up around it and was granted a city charter in 1227 under the name New Sarum. This name remained the official one until 2009, when Salisbury City Council was founded. The West of England Main Line and the Wessex Main Line interchange at Salisbury railway station.
The administration of the City of New Sarum under its previous charters was abolished by the Local Government Act of 1972, however the Salisbury District of Wiltshire County retained its historic city status. When the 1992 Local Government Act, which created the Salisbury City Council, was amended in 2009, the name was ultimately changed from “New Sarum” to “Salisbury.”
