The market town of Llanelli is the biggest settlement in the Welsh counties of Dyfed and Carmarthenshire. It is situated on the Loughor Estuary, 12.0 miles (19.0 km) southeast of the county town of Carmarthen and 10.5 miles (16.9 km) northwest of Swansea. 25,168 people lived in the town in 2011, and it is expected to have 26,225 people in 2019. When the county of Dyfed existed, Llanelli Borough Council served as the local government; however, since 1996, it has been governed by Carmarthenshire County Council.
On the grounds of the current Parc Howard, Llanelli’s origins may be located. Bryn-Caerau, an Iron Age hill fort, was formerly there (hill of the forts). Five hill forts between Old Road and the Dimpath, according to the evidence. A church is claimed to have been built on the banks of the Afon Lliedi by a saint by the name of Elli, or Ellyw, who according to mythology is the son or daughter of King Brychan. The original church would have been a thatched, partially stone-built building. The stone church was not erected until the 1200s. Its original tower is still standing today. The current church was constructed at the turn of the 20th century, although not including the tower.
