About Halesowen

Halesowen is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, England’s West Midlands county. It is one of the most populous towns in the United Kingdom without a railway station. Historically a Shropshire exclave and, since 1844, a Worcestershire exclave, the town is approximately 7 miles (11 km) from Birmingham city centre and 6 miles (10 km) from Dudley town centre. According to the 2011 United Kingdom Census, the town’s population was 58,135. Halesowen is part of the Halesowen and Rowley Regis constituency. Halesowen was a detached part of the county of Shropshire until 1844 when the Counties (Detached Parts) Act incorporated it into Worcestershire. Since 1974, it has been a part of the West Midlands Metropolitan county and conurbation, in the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, which it joined at the same time as neighbouring Stourbridge, which had previously been in Worcestershire.

Leasowes Park, located in the eastern part of Halesowen, is regarded as one of England’s first natural landscape gardens. The garden was designed by the 18th-century poet William Shenstone, who began work in 1743 and continued until he died in 1763, transforming the existing farmland he inherited after his parent’s deaths. The parkland is now Grade One Listed due to its national significance. At least two roads in the area are named after William Shenstone, as are the local theatre and a Wetherspoon’s public house.
