Guildford is a town in the English county of Surrey. It is located 28 miles (45 kilometres) southwest of London on the A3 trunk road that connects the capital to Portsmouth. According to the 2011 census, the town has a population of around 80,000 people and is the seat of the larger Borough of Guildford, which had an estimated 147,889 people in 2018. Guildford has Saxon origins, and historians attribute its location to the presence of a gap in the North Downs where the Harrow Way crossed the River Wey. By AD 978, it had become the site of an early English Royal Mint. Guildford’s prosperity was aided by the construction of the Wey Navigation and the Basingstoke Canal in the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively. The University of Surrey and the Anglican Guildford Cathedral were added in the twentieth century. Guildford now officially forms the southwestern tip of the Greater London Built-up Area, as defined by the Office for National Statistics, due to recent development running north from Guildford and connecting to the Woking area.
The Spectrum Leisure Centre in Guildford is a national award-winning sports facility with a variety of pools (for leisure and serious swimming), ten-pin bowling, a laser tag area, an ice rink, and an athletics track, as well as general halls used for indoor sports such as gymnastics and trampolining. Guildford City Football Club of the Combined Counties Football League and the Guildford Flames of the British Elite Ice Hockey League both play at the Spectrum.
