About Grimsby
Grimsby, also known as Great Grimsby, is a port town in North East Lincolnshire, England, on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, close to the North Sea. By the mid-twentieth century, it was home to the world’s largest fishing fleet, but fishing declined precipitously. During the Cod Wars, the UK was denied access to Icelandic fishing grounds, and the European Union used its Common Fisheries Policy to distribute fishing quotas to other European countries in waters within 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) of the UK coast. Since then, Grimsby has experienced a post-industrial decline, but food production has increased since the 1990s. The Grimsby-Cleethorpes metropolitan area serves as a cultural and economic hub for much of north and east Lincolnshire. Grimbarians are the people of Grimsby; the term codhead is also used jokingly, often for football fans. The 22nd of January is Great Grimsby Day. Grimsby is also the second most populous settlement in Lincolnshire, after Lincoln, with Scunthorpe coming in third.
Grimsby Town F.C., nicknamed The Mariners, has played in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, since its relegation from League Two in 2019/20, but it will return to League Two in 2022/23. Blundell Park in Cleethorpes serves as its venue. It was founded in 1878 as Grimsby Pelham and has its home ground on land off Ainslie Street. It is the oldest professional football team in Lincolnshire and one of the oldest in the country. Grimsby Town played in the English First Division during the 1930s, which was the highest level of English domestic football at the time.
