Gosport is a town and non-metropolitan borough on Hampshire’s south coast in South East England. Its population was 82,662 according to the 2011 Census. Gosport is located on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, directly opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which the Gosport Ferry connects. Gosport is located southeast of Fareham and is connected by a Bus Rapid Transit route and the A32. Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth until the last quarter of the twentieth century. As a result, extensive fortifications were built over time. HMS Sultan and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base, remain in Gosport. The Borough’s Town area, which includes Newtown, includes the town centre, the Stoke Road shopping district, Walpole Park, Royal Clarence Yard, and three modern marinas: Royal Clarence, Gosport Marina, and Haslar Marina. A large sundial known as the Millennium Timespace was installed on the Portsmouth Harbour front in 2000 as part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium project.
Privett Park is the home ground of Gosport Borough F.C. The club competes in the Southern Football League and represents the town nationally in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Fleetlands F.C., who play at Lederle Lane Stadium, is another Non-League football club in the area. RMLI Gosport F.C. was a former town team that won the 1910 FA Amateur Cup.
