About Gillingham
Gillingham was designated as an urban district under the Local Government Act of 1894, and it was designated as a municipal borough in 1903. John Robert Featherby was the Borough of Gillingham’s first mayor. Rainham was incorporated into the Gillingham Borough in 1928. It was designated as a non-metropolitan district under the Local Government Act of 1972. Under UK local government reform in the 1990s, it merged with the other Medway Towns (in the City of Rochester-upon-Medway district) in 1998 to form the Medway unitary authority.
Gillingham F.C., which plays at Priestfield Stadium, was elected to the Football League in 1920 as a member of the new Football League Third Division (south). They were kicked out of the league in 1938, only to return when the league expanded in 1950. They spent the next 50 years bouncing between the two lower divisions before finally making it to the second tier (then Division One) in the 1999-2000 season after defeating Wigan Athletic in the Wembley Play-Off Final. They spent five years at this level before being relegated twice, and they now play in League One (third tier), where they were promoted after winning their first championship in fifty years in the 2012-13 season.
