About Gateshead

Gateshead is a large town in Tyne and Wear, North East England, and the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. It is located on the southern bank of the River Tyne, directly across from Newcastle upon Tyne. The Sage, the Angel of the North, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art are among the town’s architectural highlights. Gateshead had a population of 120,046 people in 2011. Historically part of County Durham, the town was made a county borough under the Local Government Act 1888, which meant it was administered independently of the county council. The town has been administered as part of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead since 1974.

Over the summer months, Gateshead International Stadium hosts international athletics meetings and is the home of the Gateshead Harriers athletics club. It also serves as the home ground for Gateshead Football Club and hosts rugby league matches. Gateshead Thunder Rugby League Football Club played at Gateshead International Stadium until it was purchased by Newcastle Rugby Limited and renamed Newcastle Thunder. Gateshead A.F.C. was controversially voted out of the Football League in 1960 in favour of Peterborough United, while Gateshead Thunder lost their place in Super League due to a takeover (officially referred to as a merger) by Hull F.C. Both Gateshead clubs are still active at lower levels of their respective sports thanks to their supporters.
