About Exeter

Exeter is a city in Devon, England’s South West. It’s on the Exe River, about 36 miles (58 kilometres) northeast of Plymouth and 65 miles (105 kilometres) southwest of Bristol. Exeter was established as the base of Legio II Augusta in Roman Britain, under the personal command of Vespasian. During the Middle Ages, Exeter became a religious centre. Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid-11th century, became Anglican during the English Reformation in the 16th century. Exeter became a prosperous wool trade centre, but by the First World War, the city was in decline. Much of the city centre was rebuilt after WWII and is now a centre for education, business, and tourism in Devon and Cornwall. Streatham and St Luke’s are two of the University of Exeter’s constituent campuses.

Exeter City is the city’s only professional football club. They are currently in League Two and have played their home games at St James Park since their inception in 1904. The club was founded in the Football League’s Third Division (South) in 1920, but has never advanced beyond the third tier of the English football league system, and was relegated to the Conference in 2003.
