About Derby

Derby is a city in Derbyshire, England, as well as a unitary authority area. It is located on the banks of the River Derwent in Derbyshire and was historically the county town. Derby was granted city status in 1977, and its population was 248,700 according to the 2011 census. Derby is a centre for advanced transportation manufacturing, as it is home to Rolls-Royce, the world’s second-largest aero-engine manufacturer. Bombardier Transportation has a manufacturing facility at Derby Litchurch Lane Works, and Toyota Manufacturing UK has its headquarters in Burnaston, southwest of the city.

Derby gained prominence in sports after Brian Clough was appointed manager of Derby County F.C. in 1967. County were promoted to the Football League First Division in 1969 and won the English league three years later. Following Clough’s resignation in 1973, his successor Dave Mackay led Derby County to another league title in 1975, but this remains the club’s last major trophy; relegation followed in 1980, and top-flight status was not regained until 1987, Derby having spent a total of 11 seasons in the top flight (1987-1991, 1996-2002, 2007-2008). Former club managers include Arthur Cox, Jim Smith, John Gregory, and George Burley. The club’s most recent stint in the top flight (FA Premier League) ended in May 2008 after only one season, during which it won just one of 38 league games and finished with 11 points, the lowest in Premier League history.
