Christchurch is a town and civil parish in Dorset on England’s south coast. The town has a total area of 19.5 square miles (51 km2) and a population of 48,368 people in 2013. It is bordered to the west by Bournemouth and the east by the New Forest. Christchurch was a borough within the administrative county of Dorset from 1974 until 2019, when it became a part of the new Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole unitary authority. Christchurch’s harbour, beaches, nature reserves, and historically significant buildings have made it a popular tourist destination, attracting 1.5 million visitors per year. Bournemouth Airport, which serves approximately 800,000 passengers per year, is located within the former borough boundary at Hurn. The airport’s industrial park, which is one of the largest employment sites in Dorset, is home to several aerospace and engineering companies. Christchurch is a popular retirement destination and has one of the country’s oldest populations, with 30% of residents over the age of 65. Christchurch F.C. plays at Hurn Bridge Sports Club, which is located at the intersection of the Avon Causeway and Matchams Lane. The club was founded in 1885 and became a founding member of the Hampshire Football Association in 1887. Christchurch F.C. was promoted to Hampshire League One as champions in 1938, 1948, and 1986, and in 1970, they became the first team to win the Bournemouth Senior Cup three times in a row. The club joined the Wessex League (the ninth tier of the English football league system) in 1988 and is one of the league’s few amateur clubs.
