About Cambridge
Cambridge is a university city and the county town of Cambridgeshire, England, located on the River Cam about 55 miles (89 kilometres) north of London. The population of the Cambridge built-up area (which is broader than the jurisdiction of Cambridge City Council) was 158,434 according to the United Kingdom Census 2011, including 29,327 students. Cambridge was a major commercial centre during the Roman and Viking eras, and there is archaeological evidence of occupancy in the region dating back to the Bronze Age. Although contemporary city status was not formally awarded until 1951, the first town charters were granted in the 12th century.
Cambridge, England is home to the University of Cambridge (commonly known as Cambridge University). It is the English-speaking world’s second-oldest university. It is one of the world’s premier educational institutions. The University began as a collection of intellectuals in Cambridge. This may have begun in 1209 when scholars fled Oxford following a dispute with locals. Oxbridge refers to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This is not a new university. It is a colloquialism for Oxford and Cambridge. Cambridge University and Oxford University are both significant historical figures in England. Many notable people attended Cambridge University, including scientists, poets, artists, politicians, and members of the British Royal Family. Later, 89 Cambridge students were awarded the Nobel Prize.
