About Waterlooville
According to legend, the stagecoach horses would wait at a bar in the middle of town called Wait Lane End to switch teams with the team that pulled the coach up and over Portsdown Hill. Because troops returning from the Battle of Waterloo who had just disembarked at Portsmouth opted to halt and celebrate there on the pub’s opening day in 1815, the establishment was given the moniker Heroes of Waterloo. Many of them, so the lore goes, settled there. After that, the tavern was given a new name in their honour, and the neighbourhood around it was given the name Waterloo. The town’s name was changed to Waterlooville to set it apart from other locations with the same name at a later time. In 1911 Census, the town used to be known as Waterloo Parish.
