History of Warrington:
In accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835, the town of Warrington was established as a municipal borough within the limits of the ancient county of Lancashire in 1847. From 1847 through 1969, the town had its own police force. When Warrington’s population reached 50,000 in 1900, it was granted county borough status, and up until 1974, it was referred to as the County Borough of Warrington. In 1969, the Redcliffe-Maud Report recommended combining Warrington with either Merseyside or Greater Manchester metropolitan counties as part of planned local government changes for England. The borough council’s advocacy prevented this. However, as a result of the local government reforms of 1974, Warrington, which included Lymm Urban District and a portion of Runcorn Rural District, became non-contiguous with Lancashire and was thus excluded from these county boundary modifications.
