A large outdoor market is held in the Market Place every Thursday and Saturday. There is a monthly farmers’ market. The first mention of a market in Loughborough is in 1221.
History of Loughborough
Loughborough was founded as a Saxon settlement. Loughborough had a population of around 180-200 people at the time of the Domesday Book (1086). It was a pretty sizable village by the standards of the period. Loughborough grew into a bustling little town in the 13th century. Loughborough has had weekly markets and annual fairs since the early 13th century. (Fairs were similar to markets in the Middle Ages, although they only happened once a year.) They drew buyers and sellers from all over the country).
Loughborough grew into a bustling little town in the Middle Ages, despite its diminutive size to us. It had a population of barely a few hundred people. Traders or craftsmen of one type tended to live in the same street in Medieval Loughborough. Baxtergate was home to bakers. Gate is derived from an old Scandinavian term for street, ‘gata.’ Baxter means baker. So Baker Street it was. Many residents of Loughborough had animals. Any wandering animals were imprisoned in a pound known as the pinfold until the owner paid a fine to get it back. The street leading to the pinfold was known as Pinfold gata.
