History of Lancaster

Lancaster, Lancashire’s county town, is located on the River Lune, three miles inland from Morecambe’s beach resort, and is easily accessible via the M6 highway, en route to the Lake District, 20 miles north. To the east of the city is the Forest of Bowland, a region of remarkable natural beauty. Lancaster has a rich, diversified, and ancient past, as well as royal ties. On the hill beside the river, the Romans built a garrison. Lancaster which means ‘Roman fort on the River Lune,’ was the city’s first documented name, which was recorded in the Domesday book in 1086. In the 15th century, John O’Gaunt, the second Duke of Lancaster, one of the most well-known historical individuals associated with the city, strengthened the Castle. Both the Houses of Lancaster and York were direct descendants of King Edward III (John of Gaunt was Edward III’s third surviving son) and fought in the Wars of the Roses in the late 15th century.
