History of Keighley
KEIGHLEY, a market and parish town, is situated in the heart of a deep valley, at the confluence of the Warth and Laycock rivulets, which form a substantial stream here, and empty their waters into the Aire, about three quarters of a mile below. Despite its location at the far northwestern end of the garment region, Keighley is heavily involved in worsted manufacturing and also has a share of the cotton trade. In addition to the numerous mills and industries employed in these branches, the parish has two paper mills and several maize mills, and the town manufactures a large portion of the spinning and other machinery used here.
Keighley was formerly known as Kyghlay, and then Kighley, and was once the manor and home of a knightly family of the same name, one of whom, “Gilbertus Kyghlay, of Utley,” was buried here in 1203, according to an inscription on a headstone that still stands in the church. Henry Kighley obtained the privileges of a market, fair, and free-warrren from Edward 1 for this, his land. Wm. Cavendish, who was appointed Baron Cavendish of Hardwick in 1604, and from whom the Duke of Devonshire and the Earl of Burlington are derived, married a daughter and co-heiress of the last Henry Keighley.
