History of Hereford
Hereford refers to the army’s ford. In the 7th century, the Saxons arrived in this section of England, and a community built up near the ford. It became the seat of a bishop in 676 AD. Hereford had developed as a town by 700 AD. Hereford was the site of a fight between the English and the Welsh in 760. A ditch and an earth rampart with a timber fence on top most likely protected Hereford. Because to its location near the Welsh border, Hereford profited. The town benefited much from the conflict between the English and the Welsh!
The fact that St Ethelbert (d. 794) was buried at Hereford further helped the city. People used to travel considerable distances to see saints’ shrines, and they spent money in the town as a result. Alfred the Great built a network of fortified villages known as burhs across his empire in the late ninth century. If the area was attacked by the Danes, all of the males in the vicinity could congregate in the burh to battle them. Hereford had become a burh by the 10th century. There was also a mint and a weekly market in Saxon Hereford. In 914, Hereford was able to repel a Danish attack. A castle was built in Hereford around 1050.
