History of Hartlepool
A woman named Hieu erected a monastery on the site of Hartlepool around 640 AD. Nearby, a fishing town sprang developed. The monastery was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century, but Hartlepool remained a thriving community for decades. In the year 1153, the village was first mentioned. Hartlepool has grown into a small but active port by that time. There was a rebellion in England in 1174. To aid the rebel cause, 40 knights and 500 men were transported from what is now Belgium to Hartlepool. However, the Scots (who were the rebels’ friends) were defeated in battle as soon as they arrived. The foreign soldiers that had been stationed in Hartlepool had returned to Belgium.
Hartlepool, on the other hand, increased in significance during the Middle Ages, and the Church of St Hilda was completed in the late 12th century. The city of Hartlepool received its first charter from King John in 1201. (A charter was a document that granted the citizens of a municipality particular rights.) Hartlepool merchants were granted the same privileges as Newcastle merchants. A weekly market was held in mediaeval Hartlepool. (Back then, there were few stores, so if you wanted to purchase or sell something, you had to go to a market.) An annual fair was also held in Hartlepool. A fair was similar to a market in the Middle Ages, although it was only conducted once a year for a few days.
