About Harlow
Harlow Town Park, at a size of 71.6-hectares (just under 1 km²), is one of the largest urban parks in the country. The multi-functional park has been used for recreation and enjoyment for over 50 years. This park is in the centre Netteswell ward and is between the town centre and the railway station, both of which are within walking distance of the park, which is a natural thoroughfare from the station to the town centre.
There are only 12 parks with significant post-war element on the English Heritage ‘Register of Parks’. With these Harlow is seen as one of the first examples of a civic scheme to marry the modern science of town and country planning.
History of Harlow
Harlow is a modern town and a contiguous district in Essex, England’s administrative and historic county. It was selected as one of London’s eight post-World War II new towns by British planners in 1947 in order to foster the decentralisation of the metropolis.
The intended growth took occurred in the areas west of Old Harlow and along the major London-Cambridge road. Sir Frederick Gibberd designed several of the town’s significant structures as well as the town’s landscape. Harlow is home to the offices of major British corporations. Electronic engineering, printing, metallurgy, and the fabrication of scientific and surgical apparatus and furnishings are among the industries.
Harlow is marking the 70th anniversary of its incorporation as a new town.
Following the passage of the New Towns Act the previous year, it became one of the UK’s first postwar settlements in 1947. The Lawn, was opened in 1951, is credited with being the first contemporary high-rise residential tower building. The town included the first all-pedestrian shopping area, which was designed by English architect Frederick Gibberd for a population of 60,000.
