The Chilworth gunpowder operated right through the Industrial Revolution, and transported much of its wares through Guildford and its toll paid canal network.
A six-mile (10 km) branch of the London and South-Western Railway from Woking to Guildford was opened in May 1845. In 1846, Acts were passed for making two railways from Guildford: one leading to Godalming, and the other to Farnham and Alton; and in the same year, an Act was obtained for a railway from Reading, via Guildford, to Dorking and Reigate. All of these followed in the 19th century and remain in use.
Guildford was founded as a Saxon settlement near a ford. The ford was known as the guilden (golden) ford. It could have been named from the golden flowers that flourished along the riverbanks or the golden sands on the riverbanks.
Guildford grew from a village to a town in the early 10th century. As a bulwark against the Danish invasions, the English rulers were building a network of fortified villages across the kingdom at the time. Guildford could have been built as a fortified settlement. Guildford would have been encircled by a ditch and earth rampart, with a wooden stockade on top, if this was the case.
