History of Grimsby

The Danes founded Grimsby in the 9th century AD. This one was possibly Grim’s by or Grimmr’s by, as the old Danish word for village was ‘by’ (by meant village). Grimsby had a population of over 200 people at the time of the Domesday Book (1086). It was a sizable village by the standards of the period. Grimsby grew into a port as a result of its location on the Haven River, which flows into the Humber. When storms threatened, it was a safe harbour for ships, as its name suggests. As a result, it was an obvious choice for a port. Furthermore, the North Sea had abundant fishing areas, and the Humber was teeming with fish.

Grimsby grew into a bustling little port in the 12th century. Ships transported wood from Norway and wine (aristocratic drink) from France and Spain. Newcastle coal was transported by sea down the coast. Wool was exported from Grimsby in the Middle Ages. At Grimsby, an Augustinian Abbey was founded in 1132. A nunnery dedicated to St Leonard was created in 1184. Grimsby also had a leper hostel operated by the church from the 13th century. Friars also arrived in Grimsby in the 13th century. The friars were similar to monks in that they went out into the world to preach rather than retiring from it. In 1240, Franciscan friars (known as grey friars because of their grey garb) came in Grimsby.
