About Gosport

Gosport was a major naval town involved with the defence and supply infrastructure of Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth until the final part of the twentieth century. As a result, enormous defences were built over time. During the reign of Charles II, the first fortifications were built in 1678. These included two forts, Fort James and Fort Charles, as well as the Gosport Lines, a chain of bastions and double ditches that encircled the town. They were repaired, enlarged, and extended during the Georgian period in 1751 and 1752. In reaction to the French invasion threat of 1779, more improvements were undertaken. The Gosport Lines had 58 guns by 1860. No.1 Bastion, for example, has 14 guns in brick-lined emplacements shooting over a mile away. The Gosport Lines had 58 guns by 1860. No.1 Bastion, for example, featured 14 guns set in brick-lined emplacements that fired over the parapet. The Royal Commission on the Defences of the United Kingdom suggested in 1859 that a line of forts be completed to guard the outside approach to Gosport town, rendering the prior defences obsolete. They were kept, however, to prevent the town from expanding towards the new line of forts. Because to road widening in the 1890s, sections of the walls and gates were dismantled. Additional parts were destroyed between the 1920s and the 1960s. Today, the little remnants are protected antique monuments.
