History of Ellesmere Port

Since 1924, when it joined the Cheshire County League, an Ellesmere Port Town FC (EPTFC) has existed in various guises, competing against known names such as Chester FC, Altrincham, Stalybridge Celtic, and the reserve teams of Tranmere Rovers and Crewe Alexandra. Joe Mercer, a future England international, got his start in the game with an early version of the club. Mercer would go on to have a successful career as a player for Everton and Arsenal, as well as a successful managerial career with Manchester City, winning the Football League in 1968 and receiving an OBE in 1976.

In 1948, as football was resuming normalcy following World War II, a new club of the same name was created, with home games first on York Road and then at the Ellesmere Port Stadium on Thornton Road, which also hosted speedway and greyhound racing. This team competed in the Cheshire County League for nearly two decades, winning it three times in a row between 1958 and 1960, and a fourth time in 1962. The club reached its best ever level in the early 1970s, playing in the Northern Premier League from 1971 to 1973 and making it to the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in its history in 1972.
