Eastleigh History

Eastleigh’s recorded history began with a settlement named as Eastlea (later Eastley), a Saxon term meaning “clearing in the woodland.” It was known as Eastleigh in 1086 when the Domesday book was written. The Bishop of Winchester rebuilt a portion of the River Itchen in the 12th century to allow boats to move goods. Locks and bridges were developed to improve navigation in the 18th century. Until 1838, when the London and SouthWestern Railway Company built a railway between Southampton and Winchester, the small Eastley hamlet remained relatively inconsequential. Bishopstoke Junction was the name given to the railroad station because Bishopstoke was larger and more important than Eastleigh. The railway line between Basingstoke and London was extended in 1839, and the first train passed through Bishopstoke Junction. Eastleigh and Bishopstoke was the station’s new name in 1889. It wasn’t until 1923 that the train station was christened Eastleigh.

By 1851, Barton had a population of 194 and Eastley had a population of 213, thanks to the railway company building homes for its employees near the new station. The railway station started a cheese market in 1852, which quickly became Hampshire’s leading cheese market. The town grew quicker than many other communities at the time, and it was one of the first planned towns to use the gridiron system in the United States.
