History of East Kilbride
The ‘Kirk’ in Kirkwall, the ‘Eagles’ in Eaglesham, and the ‘Gleneagles’ in Gleneagles all denote the presence of a Church. Another popular Scottish town name that implies church originates from old Irish missionaries – the ‘Kil’ in Kilbride derives from the Gaelic work call (or cill), which means religious cell, which was a part of the more monastic Celtic church’s development. (In contrast to the Roman church, which had a more diocesan structure. So we have the religious cell linked with Bride or Bridget in Kilbride. The GENUKI pages for East Kilbride, which, of course, also contain material of interest to anyone researching their family history, give a flavour of the village’s past.
The establishment of the New Town, which took the name of the previous hamlet, has dominated East Kilbride’s postwar history. The village has not been spared from this development and has been neglected for many years. Today, however, it is a conservation area where visitors may still get a taste of the historic settlement. The Village has been improved and restored in recent years, and it is once again a delightful area to visit and shop.
