Ice Hockey in Durham
The original Ice Hockey team of Durham for over 60 years was the Durham Wasps who was one of the biggest names in British Ice Hockey for a long period of this time. In 1996, the team was bought over by Sir John Hall and moved to Newcastle where they were renamed the Newcastle Jesters. Between 1982 and 1992 the team completely dominated England and won numerous honours, including the Heineken Championship four times, the Norwich cup three times and the league championship on six different occasions amongst other smaller honours.
The name “Durham” is derived from the Old English word “Dun” for hill and the Norse word “holme” for the island. Dun Cow Lane is said to be one of the first streets in the ancient city, and the legend of the Dun Cow and the milkmaid also adds to the naming of this county town. The story revolves around a group of Lindisfarne monks who were tasked with transporting the body of Anglo-Saxon Saint Cuthbert in 995 AD. Saint Cuthbert’s bier is said to have come to rest on the hill at Warden Law while they were roaming in the north, and the monks were unable to move it any further, no matter how hard they tried.
