History of Brighton
Brighton started off as a modest Saxon settlement. In the fifth century AD, the Saxons arrived in Sussex and established the kingdom of Sussex, which included the settlement of Brighton. Beorthelm’s tun (Beorthelm’s farm or village) was its previous name. It evolved into the city of Brighton throughout the centuries.
Fishermen and farmers both resided in Brighton. Farmers resided in a settlement above a cliff, while fisherman lived on the foreshore under the cliff. In 1185, the Church of St Bartholomew in Brighton was first mentioned.
Brighton was granted a charter in 1313. (a document granting the people certain rights). After then, it grew into a bustling small market town. On the beach in Brighton, there was a fish market every day. In Brighton, there were weekly pig and corn markets, as well as a general market where all types of commodities were sold. Annual fairs were also held in Brighton.
