History of Blackburn
Lancashire was an impoverished county with few towns throughout the Middle Ages. Blackburn was simply a hamlet at the time. In the 16th century, however, Blackburn developed into a small market town. It had yearly fairs in addition to weekly markets (in those days fairs were like markets but they were held only once a year and people came from all over Lancashire to attend a Blackburn fair). Blackburn also had a grammar school from 1514.
Then, with the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the cotton industry in the late 18th century, Blackburn exploded. Blackburn had a population of around 11,000 people at the time of the first census in 1801.
A large number of residences were created as Blackburn expanded. Poor people have long lived in cramped, packed dwellings, which would appear horrifying to us. In the late 1800s, a typical house featured four rooms: two bedrooms upstairs and below, a front kitchen and living room, and a back scullery. Bathrooms were not common in working-class homes, and toilets were frequently shared with neighbours.
During the nineteenth century, however, Blackburn’s facilities improved. Improvement Commissioners have had the authority to pave and clean the streets of Blackburn since 1803 and the streets have been illuminated by gas since 1819.
