History of Basildon
Basildon was founded as one of eight ‘New Towns’ slated for South-East England and is located about 30 miles from London in the county of Essex. This was in 1949, following the 1946 New Towns Act. These new towns arose mostly as a result of the necessity for additional housing created by London’s long waiting lists during WWII and the destruction done to inner London’s suburban dwellings.
The space set aside for this purpose was 7,818 acres in size, measuring six miles long and three miles broad in a rectangular form. The existing towns of Laindon and Pitsea were linked inside this region, although being 312 miles apart, by the development of a new network of highways supplying the various neighbourhood housing estates.
