Barrow-in-Furness History

Hawcoat and Yarlside were rural agricultural communities until the 1850s, with fishing and salt production as traditional coastal businesses (memory of which preserved in place-name Salthouse). Until 1760, Piel Island was a small fishing village with a customs house. By the 1820s, Rampside had established itself as a seaside resort, and by the 1830s, Barrow had established itself as the primary port for iron ore shipment from the Furness mines. In 1843, the hamlet of Barrow had a population of roughly 150 people; by 1850, it had risen to 661. The arrival of the Furness Railway in 1846 altered the local economy, as did the fast rise of iron ore mining in the area. Barrow’s Haematite Iron and Steel Works opened in 1859, and Haematite Steel Co. took control in 1866. (founded 1864).
