Torquay History
Torre Abbey, a Premonstratensian monastery established in 1196, was the first significant structure constructed in Torquay. Until the Napoleonic Wars, Torquay was a little town. During this time, the Channel Fleet utilised Torbay as a protected harbour, and officers’ families frequently travelled to Torquay. Considering the town to be a convalescence hideaway where they could recuperate from illness away from the chilly and foggy winters of more northerly or easterly regions, many tourists were drawn to the town by its pleasant temperature (for the UK). From 838 in 1801, Torquay’s population rose quickly to 11,474 in 1851.

It is situated on the north of Tor Bay, next to the neighbouring town of Paignton on the western side of the bay, and across from the fishing port of Brixham, 18 miles (29 km) south of the county town of Exeter and 28 miles (45 km) east-northeast of Plymouth.
