The history of Paisley is monastic. Saint Mirin, an Irish monk who lived in the sixth or seventh century, is credited with founding a church at a location close to the Hammils waterfall on the White Cart Water. Paisley may have been a significant religious centre of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, along with Glasgow and Govan, despite the dearth of contemporaneous data. Walter fitz Alan, the Steward of Scotland, ordered the establishment of a priory in 1163 in Wenlock in Shropshire, England, from the Cluniac priory (d. 1177). This was elevated to the rank of an Abbey in 1245.
As a Church of Scotland parish church, the reconstructed Abbey and neighbouring “Place” (palace), which were built using some of the mediaeval claustral structures, still stand. Paisley Abbey, one of Scotland’s most important monastic institutions, enjoyed the favour of the Bruce and Stewart royal dynasties. In the Abbey, King Robert III (r. 1390–1406) was laid to rest. His tomb has vanished, but Princess Marjorie Bruce’s (1296–1316), an ancestor of the Stewarts, has left behind one of the Reformation’s few surviving royal monuments in Scotland.
