History of York

York was founded by the Romans. In 71 AD, they invaded Yorkshire and erected a fort between the Ouse and Foss rivers. By the mid-second century, the fort had grown into a small town. Because the troops at the fort offered a market for their wares and ships could sail up the River Ouse, craftsmen and merchants moved there.

York was given the Roman name Eboracum, which may have been derived from Celtic language meaning “site of yew trees.” By the early third century, a stone wall had encircled Roman York. There were public structures in the town, such as baths. The wealthy lived in luxurious homes with mosaic flooring.

York was presumably abandoned or virtually abandoned when the Romans left, and the old Roman structures fell into ruins. York may have had a few residents living within the walls and cultivating the land beyond, but it was no longer a town.

A bishop of York was appointed in 627. A church and a bishop’s residence were most likely erected inside the Roman town’s fortifications. It’s probable that the local Anglo-Saxon monarch constructed a royal residence within the Roman fortifications.

The town of York then resurrected in the 8th and 9th centuries. Because of its location, it was a good location for commerce, and craftsmen began to settle there. They began holding weekly markets, with commodities such as ceramics being brought in by ships from europe
