History of Worthing
Worthing was founded as a Saxon settlement. It was perhaps known as Worth or Wurtha ingas, which meaning settlement (belonging to) the Worth or Wurtha people. For generations, whatever the origin of its name, Worthing was only a hamlet where farmers resided. However, its fortunes shifted in the 18th century.
Bathing in seawater was thought to cure a variety of ailments in the 18th century. Visiting the seashore became trendy among the wealthy in the late 18th century. Brighton and Bognor Regis were among the many new beach resorts that sprung up.
When Princess Amelia arrived in 1798, Worthing began to grow. Other rich individuals were obliged to follow when members of the royal family went.
Worthing prospered as a coastal town in the early twentieth century, and its population rose fast. It was predicted to reach 62,000 by the late 1930s. The Dome was constructed in 1910. The Connaught Theatre first opened its doors in 1914. In 1926, the Pavilion Theatre opened. Denton Gardens, on the other hand, opened in 1924. In 1930, the Marine Gardens were established. In 1921, a War Memorial was constructed on a more solemn note. Furthermore, the first council dwellings were erected in Worthing in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933, Worthing erected a new Town Hall. Maureen Duffy, a writer, was born in Worthing in 1933.
During the Second World War, however, air attacks killed 44 people and damaged 97 homes in Worthing.
