About Wellingborough
Despite traces of prehistoric and Roman presence in the region, Wellingborough is primarily Anglo-Saxon in origin, having been inhabited by an Anglo-Saxon war band in the early sixth century, “Wendeling burh” – Waendel’s people’s stronghold. A helmet from this time has been discovered in Wollaston, near Wellingborough, with its crest crowned by a boar – one of just a few Anglo-Saxon helmets unearthed in the UK.
Approximately 250 people resided in “Wendleburie” in 1086, according to the Domesday Book, and part of the territory was in the hands of the fenland monastery of Crowland from AD 948 until 1539. The Dissolution of the Monasteries returned land ownership to the Crown.
Sir Christopher Hatton received the manor and other parish property from Queen Elizabeth I, while the Earl of Leicester received a smaller share. Sir Christopher purchased the latter, while the old manor was purchased by the Earl of Warwick in 1616, resulting in another partition. When John Vivian purchased both manors in the early 1800s, the two manors were reunited for the first time.
The village is known for its wells, which were popular among the early Stuart nobles and where Charles I frequented.
