About Merthyr Tydfil

The county seat of Wales’ Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, which is run by the county borough council, is Merthyr Tydfil. It is located around 37 kilometres (23 miles) north of Cardiff. Frequently referred to as just Merthyr, it is believed to have been named after Tydfil, the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, who was killed there by pagans in 480 CE. Merthyr, which in contemporary Welsh normally means “martyr,” here more closely resembles the Latin martyrium: a temple constructed over the remains of a martyr. Merthyr Cynog, Merthyr Dyfan, and Merthyr Mawr are comparable place names in southern Wales.

As a Carnegie library, Merthyr’s Central Library has a prominent spot in the town square. In 1881, 1901, and 1987, Merthyr served as the venue for both the national Urdd Gobaith Cymru Eisteddfod and the National Eisteddfod. It has a thriving music culture, much like the neighbouring town of Aberdare. Several bands, such as The Blackout and Midasuno, have experienced widespread popularity. The community hosted the Merthyr Rock Festival at Cyfarthfa Park from 2011 to 2014. The Merthyr Rising, a three-day celebration of local history via local music, is held annually at Penderyn Square at the intersection of Castle Street and High Street as a supplement to this.
