Scotland’s West Lothian region includes Livingston as its major town. It was designated in 1962, making it Scotland’s fourth post-war new town. It was first built along the banks of the River Almond in the then-counties of Midlothian and West Lothian, taking its name from a village of the same name that was integrated into the new town. It is located between the towns of Broxburn to the northeast and Bathgate to the northwest, and about fifteen miles (25 km) west of Edinburgh and thirty miles (50 km) east of Glasgow.
90% of the town’s housing was held by the LDC in 1980, but via sales and an increase in private house ownership, this number fell to about 40% by 1996. Livingston was steered by the Livingston Development Corporation until its authority ended on March 22, 1997, at which point the town was turned over to the West Lothian Council. The LDC’s most recent significant building project was the Almondvale Stadium. West Lothian Council, corporate developers like Barratt Developments and Bellway, and housing organisations like the Almond Home Association and the West Lothian Housing Partnership are all still involved in housing development.
As part of the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours Competition, the town made a request for city status in the United Kingdom in September 2021. 2022 celebrated the town’s 60th anniversary as a town, even though it was unsuccessful in gaining city status.
