Hastings is a seaside town and borough in East Sussex on England’s south coast, 24 miles (39 kilometres) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 miles (85 kilometres) south of London. The Battle of Hastings, which took place 8 miles (13 kilometres) to the northwest at Senlac Hill in 1066, inspired the town’s name. It later became one of the Cinque Ports in mediaeval times. It was a popular seaside resort in the nineteenth century, thanks to the railway that allowed tourists and visitors to reach the town. Today, Hastings is a fishing port with the largest beach-based fishing fleet in the United Kingdom. As of 2018, its population was estimated to be 92,855.
Hastings United is the town’s senior football team, competing in the Isthmian League Premier Division. It was founded in 1894 and currently plays its home games at The Pilot Field, which previously housed two other senior clubs: St Leonards and the original Hastings United, which folded in 1985. When United reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history in 2013, they were the lowest ranked team left in the competition before losing 4-1 to Middlesbrough.
