Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England, and the administrative centre of the Borough of Harrogate. Historically located in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as its spa waters and the RHS Harlow Carr gardens. The Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale AONB are 13 miles (21 kilometres) from the town centre. In the 17th century, Harrogate grew from two smaller settlements, High Harrogate and Low Harrogate. For three years in a row (2013-2015), polls named the town “the happiest place to live” in the United Kingdom. Iron, sulphur, and common salt are all found in Harrogate spa water. After its waters were discovered in the 16th century, the town became known as ‘The English Spa’ during the Georgian era. Its ‘chalybeate’ waters (containing iron) were a popular health treatment in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the influx of wealthy but sickly visitors contributed significantly to the town’s wealth.
Wetherby Road is the home ground of Harrogate Town AFC. The club now plays in League Two, the fourth tier of English football, after winning promotion to the English Football League in the 2019-20 National League Play-offs. They have a long history of rivalry with Harrogate Railway Athletic F.C., who play in the Northern Counties East Football League and are based at Station View.
