Harlow is a large town and local government district in the English county of Essex. Harlow was founded as a new town on the border between Hertfordshire and London. It occupies a large area of land on the south bank of the upper Stort Valley, which has been made navigable through other towns and features a canal section near its watermill. Old Harlow is a historic village founded in the early mediaeval period, and the majority of its high street buildings are early Victorian and residential, most of which are protected by one of the district’s Conservation Areas. Harlowbury, a de-settled monastic area in Old Harlow, contains the remains of a chapel, a scheduled ancient monument. The M11 highway runs through town to the east. Harlow has an independent commercial and leisure economy. It is also an outlying part of the London commuter belt, as well as an employment hub along the M11 corridor, which includes Cambridge and London Stansted Airport to the north.
Harlow Town F.C. plays in the Isthmian League South Central Division after being relegated from the Premier Division in the 2018-19 season. The club is best known for its lengthy run in the 1979-80 FA Cup, in which they reached the Fourth Round. This included victories over established Football League sides Southend United and, most notably, a 1-0 win over Leicester City in a replay after a 1-1 draw at Filbert Street. Harlow were eventually eliminated by Watford, who defeated them 4-3.
