About Halifax

Halifax is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is the borough’s commercial, cultural, and administrative centre, as well as the headquarters of Calderdale Council. The town became an economic hub of the old West Riding of Yorkshire in the 15th century, primarily in woollen manufacture. Halifax is the most populous town in the Calderdale borough. During the industrial revolution, Halifax was a thriving mill town. Halifax is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, and early settlement evidence is scant. By the 12th century, the township had become the religious centre of Halifax’s vast parish, which stretched from Brighouse in the east to Heptonstall in the west. Halifax Minster, which dates from the 12th century in parts, is dedicated to St John the Baptist. William Herschel, who discovered Uranus, was the minster’s first organist in 1766. Halifax’s coat of arms incorporates the chequers from the original coat of arms of the Earls Warenne, who ruled over the town during Norman times.

Sports clubs in the town are reasonably successful. Halifax Panthers, the city’s rugby league club, competes in the Betfred Championship. The town’s football team, F.C. Halifax Town, plays in the National League, England’s fifth division. Halifax Panthers is one of the most historic rugby league clubs, having been founded in 1873. They have won the English Championship four times and the Challenge Cup five times.
