Gloucester is a cathedral city and the county town of Gloucestershire in the English county of Gloucestershire. Gloucester is located on the Severn River, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the west, 19 miles (31 kilometres) east of Monmouth and 17 miles (27 kilometres) east of the Welsh border. Gloucester has a population of around 150,000 people, including suburban areas. It is a port connected to the Severn Estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
The city’s economy is dominated by service industries, with strong financial, research, distribution, and light industrial sectors. It was historically significant in the aerospace industry. Because international customers complained that the name Gloucestershire was too difficult to spell, the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company at Brockworth changed its name to the Gloster Aircraft Company in 1926. Gloucester’s aviation history and involvement in the jet engine are commemorated by a sculpture in the city centre.
Gloucester hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1991 and again in 2015, hosting four matches at Kingsholm Stadium with national teams from Japan, Georgia, the United States, Scotland, Tonga, and Argentina. Gloucester Rugby, one of Europe’s top rugby union clubs and a member of the Aviva Premiership, plays at Kingsholm Stadium.
Meadow Park is the home of Gloucester City A.F.C., a National League North club founded in 1883. Due to the 2007 floods, the club played outside of the city from 2007 until 2020.
