About Ellesmere Port
Ellesmere Port is a port town in Cheshire, England, in the Cheshire West and Chester borough. Ellesmere Port is located on the Wirral Peninsula’s southeastern edge, 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) north of Chester, 12 miles (19 kilometres) south of Birkenhead, 16 miles (26 kilometres) southwest of Runcorn, and 11 miles (18 kilometres) south of Liverpool. According to the 2011 census, the town had a population of 61,090 people. Ellesmere Port is also part of the larger Birkenhead urban area, which had 325,264 people in 2011. The town was founded on the Mersey River at the entrance to the Ellesmere Canal. It has retained large industries such as the Stanlow oil refinery, chemical works, and the Vauxhall Motors car factory, in addition to a service sector economy. There are also several tourist attractions, such as the National Waterways Museum, the Blue Planet Aquarium, and the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet.
In the mid to late 1970s and early 1980s, speedway racing was held at the Thornton Road stadium; since March 2013, the stadium has been used for greyhound racing. Ellesmere Port Gunners competed in the second-tier Leagues. The Gunners had their best season in 1985 when they won the National League championship. The season was marred by inspirational captain Joe Owen’s career-ending injury. Owen was injured in a truck accident in Birmingham. Before the formation of Vauxhall Motors F.C. in 1963, Ellesmere Port Town F.C. was the town’s main football team. Ellesmere Port Town F.C. was established in 1948 and disbanded in 1973.
