About Dudley

Dudley is a large market town and administrative centre in the English county of West Midlands, 5.5 miles (8.9 kilometres) south-east of Wolverhampton and 8 miles (13 kilometres) north-west of Birmingham. Historically a Worcestershire exclave, the town is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley and had a population of 79,379 in 2011. The Metropolitan Borough of Stourbridge and Halesowen had a population of 312,900 people. The borough council designated Dudley as the Black Country’s capital in 2014. Originally a market town, Dudley was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution and grew into an industrial centre in the nineteenth century with its iron, coal, and limestone industries before declining and being relocated to the nearby Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the 1980s. The Dudley Zoo and Castle, the 12th-century priory ruins, and the Black Country Living Museum are all popular tourist attractions.

The town’s key football teams, Dudley Town F.C. and Dudley Sports F.C. have never progressed beyond the Southern League. Dudley Town is the older of the two clubs in town and has had the most success. Their most notable achievement was promotion to the Southern Premier League in 1985, but the following year they were forced to leave Dudley Sports Centre (at the intersection of Tipton Road and Birmingham Road) due to mining subsidence. They spent the next 11 years at Round Oak Sports Ground in Brierley Hill, then spent a season ground-sharing at Halesowen Town before resigning from the Southern League due to financial difficulties. The club was reformed in 1999 to compete in the West Midlands Regional League and share the War Memorial Athletic Ground with Stourbridge.
