About Colchester

Colchester is a historic market town in the county of Essex, in the East of England, and the largest settlement within the borough of Colchester. Colchester stands on the site of Camulodunum, the first major Roman city in, and briefly the capital of, Roman Britain. Colchester claims to be the oldest recorded town in the United Kingdom. Since the Roman era, Colchester has been a military garrison, and it is now home to the 16th Air Assault Brigade. It had an estimated population of 138,131 in 2019 with surrounding areas. Colchester Castle and Colchester United Football Club are both located in the city of Colchester. Colchester Castle is a Norman castle dating from the second half of the eleventh century in Colchester, Essex, England. Because it was built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius in Colchester, the castle’s keep is mostly intact and is the largest example of its kind in Europe. Colchester United Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Colchester, Essex. The club plays in League Two, the fourth tier of English football leagues. The club was founded in 1937 by Matthew Tierney and spent its early years in the Southern Football League before being elected to the Football League in 1950. Between 1950 and 1990, Colchester alternated between the Third and Fourth Divisions, during which time they achieved one of their most memorable results, a 3-2 FA Cup fifth-round victory over Don Revie’s Leeds United in 1971.
