About Chatham

Chatham is a town in North Kent, South East England, under the Medway unitary authority. The town grew up around Chatham Dockyard and various Army barracks, as well as 19th-century forts that served as a protective shield for the dockyard. The Corps of Royal Engineers is still stationed at Brompton Barracks in Chatham. The Dockyard closed in 1984, but the remaining major naval structures are a draw for a thriving tourism sector. Following closure, a portion of the site was renovated as a commercial port, while other portions were redeveloped for commercial and residential use, and a portion was utilised as the Chatham Historic Dockyard museum. Among its attractions is the submarine HMS Ocelot.

Chatham Town F.C., as well as Lordswood F.C., are both members of the Southern Counties East Football League. The extinct Chatham Excelsior F.C. was a forerunner of football in Southern England. Gillingham F.C. is seen as representing Medway as a whole. Holcombe Hockey Club, situated near Chatham, is one of the largest in the country. The men’s first XI play in the England Hockey League. Power kiting is offered in the Great Lines Heritage Park (between Gillingham and Chatham) and at Capstone Farm Country Park. Skiing is also available nearby at Capstone Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre, which is located near Capstone Farm Country Park.
