About Bury

Bury (also known as Bury Bridge) is a town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Irwell. It is located 5.5 miles (8.9 kilometres) east of Bolton, 5.9 miles (9.5 kilometres) west of Rochdale, and 7.9 miles (12.7 kilometres) north of Manchester. Bury is the Metropolitan Borough of Bury’s principal settlement and administrative centre, with a population of 78,723 in 2015. As of 2011, the borough of Bury has a population of 187,474. Bury, historically a part of Lancashire, rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution as a textile mill town. Bury is famous for its open-air Bury Market and black pudding, a popular local delicacy. The town is served by the Manchester Metrolink tram system. The historic market in the town centre is noted for its “world famous” black pudding vendors. Bury Market was originally well-known for its tripe, although this has dwindled in recent decades. The Chadwick family owns the Bury Black Pudding Co, which supplies black pudding to stores such as Harrods and other supermarkets, and the market attracts visitors from all around Greater Manchester and beyond. Bury’s ‘World Famous’ Market has been open for over 600 years; the first market licence was obtained in 1444. The National Association of British Market Authorities named Bury Market the finest ‘British Market of the Year’ in 2006, out of 1,150 markets in the UK.
