About Burnley

Burnley is a town in Lancashire, England, and the administrative centre of the broader Borough of Burnley, with a population of 73,021. It is located 21 miles (34 kilometres) north of Manchester and 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Preston, at the junction of the rivers Calder and Brun. The town is surrounded by countryside to the south and east, as well as the settlements of Padiham and Brierfield to the west and north, respectively. It is known as a regional centre of excellence for the aerospace and industrial industries. Burnley Football Club, nicknamed “The Clarets” and formed in 1882, dominates the town’s sporting landscape. They were among the first to go professional (in 1883), putting pressure on the Football Association to allow player wages. Burnley was one of the Football League’s 12 founding members in 1888. Under chairman Bob Lord, the club became recognised for its youth policy and scouting system from the 1950s through the 1970s and was one of the first to establish a purpose-built training site (Gawthorpe). The club presently plays in the Championship, the second highest level of English football. Turf Moor has been the club’s home ground since 1883, with average attendances of 20,000 in the Premier League. The club is well-supported in the community and has the country’s greatest ratio of match attendance to town population. Burnley became English champions twice, in 1920-21 and 1959-60, won the FA Cup once, in 1913-14, and the FA Charity Shield twice, in 1960 and 1973.
